Tildeverse

I was not expecting to find something like it in 2026.

This morning I read a news post by Ars Technica, that you can also read here: A hacker group is poisoning open source code at an unprecedented scale. It talks about the latest GitHub hack.

If you read more than two posts from me, you probably noticed I rant a lot. I’m sorry for that, I didn’t want to rant, but the internet is not a ocean of roses.

So, I started to think that I might delete my GitHub account, but do you know what? What difference does it make? I primary use Codeberg for my real open-source projects, and it can also be target, which made my realize I’m just in a paranoia right now.

I have been feeling so discomfortable using the internet, and I already do a great work by not maintaining an account on any social media platform. Why does things only seems to getting worse? Hardware are getting very powerful, but software evolves in the opposite side!

My GitHub is still there, but I started to search over other git instances… until I found this: tildegit.org. It’s just another Gitea provider, with an exception. If you go to the bottom right corner, you will find a link to another domain: tildeverse.org.

What is tildeverse? They describe theirselves like this: “we’re a loose association of like-minded tilde communities. tildes are pubnixes in the spirit of tilde.club, which was created in 2014 by paul ford.”. These people are not only hosting a Gitea instance, but a ton of other open-source software, ranging from IRC, radio and even server for games like Minecraft and Factorio. But tildeverse isn’t a singular entity, they are quite decentralized over different “tildes”, which I personaly understand as computers. Each member runs a server, which users can create their accounts and do stuff. Some noticeble ones I found were ctrl-c.club and tilde.town.

I felt something very different about this place. It’s the old web! I don’t have much to review, since so little I know about it, but it’s a place with fresh air. I never saw anything like this, and I never thought I could find a community like this, yet hidden under the enshitified internet.

I have no words left. You should check it by yourself.
